Middle school students apply their knowledge about art movements, art techniques, and art concepts to high level projects.
Illuminated Letter Painting: Students learn about illuminated manuscripts and look at contemporary art pieces inspired by the art form.
M.C. Escher-Inspired Surrealist Staircase Drawing: This is a lesson about Surrealist imagery and the Dutch artist/mathematician M.C. Escher.
Paper Cut Out Project: For this lesson, students learn about paper cut out art from around the world. After looking at contemporary paper cut out art, students practice cutting with an Xacto knife. Students brainstorm ideas and design their own paper cut outs.
Paper Quilling Project: Students study the history of paper quilling and its evolution into a contemporary art form. Student create their own relief sculptures using paper quilled shapes.
Calavera Drawing: This project is a part of our unit lesson on Día De Los Muertos. Students view traditional and contemporary calaveras and then design their own.
Lucky Bamboo Drawing: This lesson begins with learning about some of the aesthetics of eastern art. Students also learn about the significance of Lucky Bamboo. This lesson also involves 3D drawing skills and incorporating a winding element into an artwork.
The Firebird Project: This is a collaborative project with music class. Students study the Firebird Suite by Igor Stravinsky. We learn about the Firebird story and look at artwork featuring the firebird. Student then interpret the firebird in alignment with their own interests.
Ceramic Dragon Eye: Students learn about relief sculpture as they sculpt and texturize their dragon eye. Students carefully glaze their sculpture with dramatic results.
Embroidered Scarabs: Students learn the basics of embroidery for this project. Each student interprets the scarab in their own way as they develop their imagery in stitches.
Self Portrait Drawing: For this project, students learn about facial proportions and rendering skin tones and hair styles.
