Grade 2-3
Second and Third Grade students the investigate the natural world and practice 3D drawing and painting skills. They span the globe to learn about folk arts from other cultures. Lessons explore geometric vs. organic Shapes, color theory and sculptural forms made from paper and ceramic clay.
Students learn about the Tap Tap bus from Haiti. We read I Want to Ride the Tap Tap by Danielle Joseph and create a Tap Tap Bus Collage using brightly colored paper, scissors with textured blades and hole punches.
As a part of their unit on pollinators, students learn all about bee anatomy. We construct a Mixed Media Bee and create a class installation to share our knowledge.
Students work in the classroom, in STEAM class and in Art class to make a pollination installation. They learn how flowers attract bees and about the special features of pollinators.
In art class we learn important vocabulary world which help us to discuss and analyze art pieces. We view many artworks to determine what the artist has placed in the foreground, middleground and background. This Distant Space Desert Drawing is one lesson in our 3D Drawing Unit.
The Fruit Bowl Painting is a jam-packed lesson focusing on technique, color theory and making compositional choices.
Students use simples strips of black paper and glue to construct 3D Drawings in the Air. Each sculpture is unique as students build their modules and arrange them into free standing forms.
The Animal Habitat Pop-Up Book combines 3D/realistic animal-drawing skills with paper sculpture and research into various animal species.
Our Waxy Monkey Tree Frog Ceramic Sculpture is a lesson in hand-building with clay pinch pots and coils as well as a lesson in animal adaptations. Student learn about the firing and glazing processes involved in the evolution of this project.
After a deep dive into the color wheel and learning how to mix earth tones, students create the Swampy Turtle Paper Sculpture. We also learn about the turtle as a Native American Symbol that is connected to the phases of the moon.
