K-1 students explore shapes, colors, lines and patterns. They create abstract art as well as draw and paint from life. Students combine basic shapes to draw people, objects and animals. Collage work allows us to further develop fine motor skills and make discoveries about the elements of art.
Kindergarten Build a Frog Mixed Media Collage: Students practice cutting, gluing and arranging their shapes to build a frog. They add detail to the environment. In preparation for this project, we learned about lily pads and ponds that welcome frog visitors.
Kindergarten Popsicle Stick Puppet Theater. Students brainstorm ideas for a puppet show. The theme of the puppet show informs the decoration of the puppet theater. This project encourages story telling and allows student to express their unique ideas.
Kindergarten Abstract Watercolor Painting. This activity involves making choices about Shapes and colors. Students paint and abstract image featuring and arrangement of geometric shapes.
First Grade Peter and the Wolf Popsicle Stick Puppet Show: This project is a collaborative effort between the Art and Music Departments. Students study the elements of the Peter and the Wolf symphony written by Sergei Prokofiev. In Art class we apply our knowledge of combining shapes to draw people objects and animals. We create the characters and the setting. This project invites rich conversations and connections amongst art, music, theater and literature.
First Grade Piet Mondrian-Inspired Collage: In preparation for this lesson, students learn about the progression of Piet Mondrian's work from realistic subjects matter painted in muted tones to abstract geometric designs painted in the primary colors and black and white. This lesson synthesizes art history, color theory, geography and close reading of artwork.
First Grade Primary Colors Coffee Cup Painting: In First grade we develop skills in 3D drawing and begin our study of the color wheel. Students use the primary colors for the mug, table and back wall. We work to mix the correct balance of primary colors to create the brown tone of the coffee or hot chocolate.
