Grade 4-5
Grades 4 and 5 further develop their fine motor skills as they delve into the fiber arts and explore repoussé. We continue with clay modeling and paper sculpture. Students learn about tapestries, quilting and soft sculpture as they become more facile with stitching, weaving and tying knots. Ceramic sculptures become more specific and detailed.
Applique Ice Cream Cones. This project introduces sewing skills and leads to soft sculpture projects.
Ceramic chameleons. This project involves hand building with clay and creating textures in clay.
Tiny Tapestries. Students practice weaving on small looms. During this lesson we explore the history of tapestries, Navajo rugs and learn about weaving as a contemporary art form.
Clay Suns. This project is part of a unit on Mexican Folk art. Students hand build with clay and carefully glaze their fired pieces.
Repoussé Project. This project emphasizes the elements of movement, texture and pattern. Students learn about the origins of repoussé as well as its contemporary incarnations.
Shark Puppet. This is an involved sewing project which results in a hand puppet with personality and bite.
